In 2017, sustainable investing was becoming a mainstream investment strategy, but the standards for measuring the “environmental, social, and governance” performance of companies were elusive and undefined. This report evaluated 12 leading ESG frameworks for how they measured the operational effects of companies on the labor and other human rights of the people and communities they touch. The findings were a scathing indictment of the sustainable investing industry, which relied on companies to self-report on their efforts, without consistent standards or meaningful metrics to evaluate their actual impacts.
